Bushings (Optional Upgrade)
Many steering racks are equipped with factory rubber bushings that can be replaced with solid billet units for improved steering response and chassis feedback.
Billet bushings are manufactured in-house and installed during service.
If you are interested in this upgrade, please email for pricing prior to ordering.
Important – Order Notes
When placing your order, you must include the make and model of the vehicle the steering rack came from in the notes section at checkout.
Failure to include this information may delay your service.
Understanding Depowered Steering Racks
A power steering rack without a functioning hydraulic system essentially becomes an air pump. As the rack moves, air (or residual fluid) is forced through the internal valve body, creating unnecessary resistance and inconsistent steering feel.
A properly depowered rack eliminates this issue by internally servicing and modifying the rack and pinion assembly to operate correctly without hydraulic assist.
While this is not a cure-all solution, for the cost, this should be your first step before exploring more complex steering modifications.
Experience & Reputation
Eaton MotorWorks has offered this service since early 2014, with hundreds of racks serviced throughout the DSM, EVO, and 3000GT communities and beyond.
Each rack is individually serviced — this is not a mass-production process.
Work Performed
Every rack undergoes the following process:
-
Complete disassembly
-
High-pressure parts washer cleaning
-
Full inspection of housing, rack, and pinion
-
If corrosion is present from moisture buildup:
-
Rack is machined and repolished
-
-
If no corrosion is present:
-
Rack is repolished
-
-
Pinion shaft valve body is removed and TIG welded 360° using 316S filler rod for added rigidity
-
The valve body is factory located by a pin and retained with a C-clip. If left unsecured, the locating pin can loosen over time and cause sloppy steering. Welding prevents this issue.
-
-
Hydraulic ports are removed and welded shut
-
Moly greased
-
All bearings are cleaned and re-lubricated
-
Preload is set to Eaton MotorWorks specification
Steering Feel Disclaimer
Steering feel will vary depending on:
-
Steering wheel diameter
-
Tire size
-
Tire compound
If additional assistance is desired, we recommend installing an inline electric steering assist motor with a rotary control knob to fine-tune steering effort to driver preference.
